Porcelain veneers are the material of choice for slight improvements in cosmetic and restorative dentistry. Porcelain veneers can be very thin, allowing for minimal or no tooth reduction and in some cases, requires no anesthesia. Preservation of the strong enamel tooth structure provides for a longer-lasting restoration and is minimally invasive. The semi-translucent veneer can be made to match the light transmitting properties of natural teeth, and being metal free, eliminates the hated “black” marginal line found around many traditional porcelain fused to metal crowns.
Exquisite natural esthetics are achieved with this restoration, and is most often used to:
- close spaces
- replace worn enamel
- repair broken or chipped
- re-shape crooked or
- misaligned teeth
- to cover permanently stained or discolored teeth
Porcelain veneers or onlays are also used on back teeth, and are our preferred method to restore broken molar teeth or replace large mercury silver fillings. Our porcelain veneers and onlays appear as a natural tooth, in other words, they are totally invisible.
The development of porcelain veneers can be traced to NASA and the space shuttle program in the late 1970’s. When NASA had trouble with missing tiles upon re-entry, they developed this method of bonding the porcelain tiles to the undercarriage. This bonding technology was adapted to dentistry and has allowed us to bond porcelain veneers directly to the tooth surface without the underlying metal substructure. The bond creates an amazingly sturdy restoration, which is as strong as natural tooth structure and one that will not stain.

Cosmetic bonding refers to restorations made from composite resin material, and is used similarly to porcelain veneers and onlays. Cosmetic bonding requires no outside lab procedure and is built directly onto the tooth structure.
- tissue compatible
- kind to the opposing teeth
Cosmetic bonding allows us to preserve the greatest amount of natural tooth structure. Exquisite natural esthetics are achieved, as well as the light transmitting qualities found in natural teeth. Dr. Thakkar and Dr. Swenda have artistic abilities that make the results of cosmetic bonding long-lasting and realistic.
Bonding is most often used to:
- close spaces
- replace worn enamel
- repair broken or chipped teeth
- re-shape crooked or misaligned teeth
- cover permanently stained or discolored teeth
Composite bonding can also be used to fill cavities and to replace existing failed fillings.
We are able to create beautiful restorations with composite bonding. Visit our smile gallery for examples of these restorations or contact our office for a no-cost consultation or more information.
Dental Implants are the best option when you have to replace missing or damaged teeth. They are a strong, stable and beautiful alternative to bridges, partials or dentures.
Missing teeth can cause:
- Defects in the bone
- Shifting and drifting teeth
- Bite changes
- Chewing difficulty
- Excessive wear on remaining teeth
- Cracking and chipping of remaining teeth
- Changes and damage to the jaw joint or TMJ
- Speech impediments
Missing teeth can also affect one’s self esteem and alter facial appearance.
Dental implants act as a substitute tooth root. They bond with the bone to form a stable foundation for permanent replacement teeth that look, feel and function like natural teeth. Dental Implants offer a great long-term solution to missing teeth. They have been used for over 40 years and are very safe and highly successful. You don’t have to go through life enduring discomfort and changes to your facial structure, avoiding certain foods, risking bone loss, and bracing for embarrassing situations.
Your general dentists’ role in the implant procedure is planning and placing the tooth restorations on the dental implants once surgery is complete and the site has healed.
- Can successfully replace one or more lost teeth
- Help minimize bone loss
- Replace missing teeth without compromising adjacent teeth by grinding them down for a bridge or securing a partial denture
- Increase stability, making chewing more natural
- Eliminate the pain of ill-fitting dentures and partials
- Improve appearance
- Can be used to stabilize loose fitting dentures
- Are a way to improve your quality of life and self confidence.
Examples of dental implants can be viewed at our smile gallery.

TMD and TMJ Disorders
Temporomandibular Joint, TMJ, disorders or Temporomandibular Dysfunction, more commonly known as TMD, affects more than fifteen percent of American adults and children. Common symptoms include pain in or around the ear, tenderness of the jaw, clicking or popping noises when opening and closing the mouth, headaches, neck aches, and even growth discrepancies in children. Other TMD symptoms may include:
- Facial pain
- Tooth sensitivity to hot and cold
- Difficulty chewing
- Locked jaw
- Inability to bite all the way down
- Limited mouth opening
- Uncomfortable bite
- Changing bite
- Tinnitus (ringing in ears)
- Muffled ears
- Worn down teeth
- Gum recession
- Bone loss around the teeth
- Clenching or bruxing
- Jaw growth discrepancies
- Facial asymmetry
There are many causes of TMD including: traumatic injury to the chin, jaw, or the TMJ itself; arthritis; stressful situations; and poor dental treatment that has adversely affected the bite to a more open or closed position than normal. These disorders often lead to clenching of the teeth during the day and grinding of the teeth while sleeping, which in turn causes a great deal of damage to the teeth and the TMJ itself. Failure to treat TMJ dysfunction early on, can lead to serious damage of the joint and possible surgical intervention.
Many sufferers of TMD have found relief with treatments offered at our office. It is our goal to have our patients become comfortable and return to normal TMJ function, while using the least invasive and conservative treatment possible. For most patients the ideal result of being pain free can be achieved. For others, depending on the nature and stage of the illness, effective management is the maximum goal. Depending on the nature and severity of an individual’s condition, the appropriate therapy is determined. For some, simple treatment designed to relax the muscles and reduce inflammation is used. For others, more comprehensive diagnostics and dental restorations are needed.

One of the newest and most exciting technologies in recent years is the introduction of Invisalign orthodontics. Unlike traditional braces that attach wires to the teeth, the Invisalign system moves the teeth with undetectable clear plastic aligners. Using the latest advances in 3-D computer technology, Invisalign translates Dr. Thakkar’s instructions into a series of plastic aligners. Each set is worn for two weeks, moving the teeth gradually until we have achieved the desired result. Most cases are completed within twelve months. The Invisalign system has some very nice advantages. With 3-D modeling, the patient and Doctor are able to preview the finished results, which give valuable insight to future dental needs as well as accurately predicting the length of treatment. Since the aligners are clear and removable, our patients are able to brush and floss after each meal. Appearance and speech are minimally affected. You can see the beautiful smiles we have created with Invisalign in our smile gallery. Please visit www.invisalign.com or contact our office for more information.
When teeth are badly broken, extensively decayed or there is a need to replace an existing crown, crowns are the treatment of choice. Crowns or “caps” are a more traditional method of tooth restoration and generally only used when teeth are so badly damaged there isn’t enough tooth structure left to support a filling or a veneer. Because the enamel has to be completely removed for a crown or “cap”, the stronger and more conservative onlay or porcelain veneer restoration is generally the treatment of choice whenever possible. Crowns can be made of all porcelain, porcelain fused to gold, porcelain fused to zirconium or all gold. The best crown material is often determined by an individual’s bite and esthetic considerations. Dr. Thakkar will guide you through your options should you have a tooth that is badly decayed or discolored. To see examples, please visit our smile gallery. If you are faced with the prospect of losing some or all your teeth, Dr. Thakkar and her caring staff will ensure that you understand all your options.
